Choc Nut Tahini Bliss Balls
If anyone has struggled with vitamin and mineral deficiencies before, you will understand how hard it is to improve your levels through supplements. One of the issues I had when I was sick was that I had severely low magnesium levels. Usually when you have low magnesium you also develop a secondary calcium deficiency because, when it comes to the absorption of these minerals, you cant have one without the other. And that is what happened to me. I developed dangerously low magnesium and as a by-product I ended up with low calcium as well. I always struggled to understand how I could have developed low calcium since I basically lived off dairy. I had cheese every day three times a day and loved every moment of it. Everyone was a little confused about it because cheese was just about the only thing I ate. When I started to do my own research, it became clear to me that it didn’t matter how much dairy you consumed, the calcium found in dairy, although plentiful, is not well utilized by the body and usually just ends up floating around in your blood stream and your saliva doing nothing much at all except for creating tartar in your mouth which leads you down a track towards periodontal disease. That’s when I realized I had to look for an alternative. My aunty, who is a doctor and kept a close eye on me while I was sick, suggested I started eating sesame seeds because of their high calcium content. She would make me grind them up in a mini food processor and eat them mixed in with some honey. The reason for that is if you eat whole sesame seeds they will pass straight through your digestion without being broken down in the slightest, so in order to release their nutrition, they need to be ground up. It was only years later that I discovered tahini. I’m not sure if it just wasn’t as popular all those years ago so it wasn’t easy to find or I simply just didn’t think of it but I wish I had! Tahini is one of the highest known sources of calcium out there, and unlike dairy; it has some pretty impressive magnesium levels as well. All highly absorbable good stuff because tahini is basically ground up sesame seed paste. Would have saved me a lot of trouble!
I had a friend come and stay at our place for a week or two a few years back and as a thank you for having her over she made me these delicious tahini bliss balls and I have been making them ever since. I love taking them to work and having them as a treat after lunch. They are loaded with calcium, magnesium, high in plant based protein and healthy fats and so delicious they actually almost taste like nutella. Hope you enjoy the recipe

- ¾ cup chopped nuts and seeds (I used cashews, macadamias, almonds, walnuts sunflower seeds)
- ½ cup tahini
- ½ cup maple syrup
- ¼ cup cacao powder
- 1 drop vanilla extract
- ¾ cup desiccated coconut plus extra for rolling
- Begin by adding your nuts and seeds to a food processor. Pulse a few times until all nuts are evenly crushed
- Add all the rest of the ingredients to the food processor and process until mixture comes together in a dough. You can add more coconut if mixture is too sticky
- Roll the mix into balls and then roll around in some extra coconut to coat.
- Can be stored in the fridge of freezer. The freezer gives a firmer texture. Enjoy!
